Lost Summer: New Works by Jeila Gueramian

28 August - 8 October 2020
"I always say that my artwork is an inspirational poster to myself.  And this work is no different. In the past months of familial solitude I found myself returning to my painting and illustration roots.  So many of us were and are stuck inside with our families. I was living with 3 teenagers. You know that whole story.. I was getting to know them in new ways as they move into adults, as well as seeing them become nostalgic for their childhoods. Silly animal memes were sent around the house - all of us trying to out-cute each other. It will be a quarantine-memory forever.
All of the animals in these works are symbols. Some have a great deal of personal meaning to me, and some were part of the meme quest for the cutest animals  on earth. (The quest has not ended!)  My family has needed them for cheer and positivity. The summertime drinks are commentary about timely and trending consumer products; a canned or bottled essence of ephemeral, summery feelings. All part of our ‘Lost Summer’ experience."

What do you listen to while making art?

I am lucky to live with a DJ. So I listen to whatever Scott has on. But I listen to a lot of podcasts and audiobooks. One favorite podcast is an Australian show called Mysterious Universe. I also love to take musical recommendations from my teenage kids. This week its 100 Gecs and Injury Reserve.

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

Cute animals, liminal states, stars and planets in the sky, perception of consciousness, wide open skies and landscapes, Crisp air, unexplained phenomena.

    What turns you off?

People who are stingy, self centered and take themselves too seriously. Also my ultimate turn off songs are "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys and "We Built This City" by Starship (yuck!)

    Favorite movie?

Zardoz is my favorite movie. I came across it on TV when I was a kid. It took me years to figure out what it was. It blew my mind and steered me towards the weird.

    Favorite meal?

Chelo Kabob - I am Iranian and it is our national dish.

Artists that have most recenly inspired you?

Natalie Baxter, Kat Ryals, Kristen Lamb and Max Colby!

Also that band 100 Gecs. I love seeing the creative expression of youth culture.  I'm fascinated by it.
